Payday Peanut Candy Bar Review - Made in Hershey PA

Updated on October 23, 2012

Introduction - Payday Candy Bar Review

I really wanted to write a review on Payday candy bars for a while now. We eat Payday candy bars fairly often as people bring bags of snack food candy into the office fairly regularly and Paydays seem to be in the normal junk food candy rotation.

I remember watching a documentary on the famed American Poet Charles Bukowski. He used to eat a Payday for dinner during times when he had little money (I don't recommend that nutrition plan :-). He called the Payday bar "beautiful" .

How beautiful is a Payday candy bar? Are they good to eat? Keep reading and I'll give you a quick review where we'll rate this snack food.

Who Makes Paydays ?

The Hershey Company in Hershey PA makes Payday candy bars.

The Look

A Payday candy bar is a somewhat round somewhat rectangular snack bar that has peanuts covering the entire surface. The candy bar clearly markets itself to peanut lovers as it looks as though the entire bar is made from nuts stuck over every inch of surface.

The Size

For the sake of this article we are reviewing the small bite-sized snack bars . They weight .7 ounces (19 grams). The size of this Payday bar is 2 1/2 inches long by 1 1/4 inches wide. Around 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick.

Where to Buy Payday Candies

You can get Payday candies at just about any kind of convenience store, grocery store, drug store, or just about any place that sells food.

You can even order Payday bars without going to the store. Click on the product below for more information. If you are not seeing the size or quantity of Paydays you want click on the product anyway where you'll find more to choose from.

The Taste

The 'glue' so-to-speak holding all of the peanuts together is a relatively thin, but tasty, film of caramel. Basically the bar is peanuts, caramel and very importantly, salt. This is a very salty treat. Not repulsive salty in my opinion but very pronounced. Salt is a historically popular ingredient to add to peanuts and nuts in general. It keeps peanuts from tasting too bland. It makes you want more. The salt on a Payday really helps the flavor take off on your pallet.

The amount of caramel Hershey uses is just right. They use enough caramel to enhance the flavor, keep the peanuts intact (mostly, more on that below :-) but not so much caramel that it becomes a sticky or gooey candy bar.

The flavor of a Payday is a peanut buttery, salty experience. It is a peanut lovers candy bar.

One pleasant surprise to this bar was that it is not nearly as crunchy as I thought it would be. It looks like it would be hard to eat but it really does melt in your mouth without losing that peanuty character.

If I had one complaint, I'll say that invariably when I am eating this treat, at least one or more peanuts fall off of the bar. Nothing horrible, but it can make for a slightly messy snack when eating in the car or in the office.

To Sum Up

If you love salted peanuts, you'll love eating this snack. If you don't care for salt or need to stay away from salt, don't eat Payday bars.

I recommend this Hershey Company made candy bar if you are looking for a break from chocolate and are a nut lover.
